By the way, that gives you more money to self insure with because you’re not spending all your money on home warranties, extended warranties, electronics warranties and all these other rip off things. There are some advantages to participating in a home warranty program. Warranties usually cost between $250 and $600 a year, with many deductibles ranging from $30 to $100.

I think the fact that neither the ten home warranty companies contacted nor the National Home Service Contract Association chose to respond to Angie's List's interview requests speaks volumes about the character of the industry. I bought a home last year and at the suggestion of my real estate agent purchased a home warranty plan with Old Republic. My agent said he used to suggest AHS but had found there were a lot of complaints. I thoroughly read the details so I knew when I had to make calls for service what was and what was not covered. Every one of my service calls were handled smoothly by OR and the contractors were knowledgeable and prompt in resolving the issue. I had my dishwasher repaired, my refrigerator/freezer repaired, some plumbing and electrical issues.

When I requested on numerous occasions for a written denial I finally received a statement claiming they denied the claim due to "lack of routine maintenance. " That is not the reason for the failure and can be certified by the two pool companies.
